Palawan: The One That Ruins Other Beaches for You

Everyone tells you Palawan is the best. It's annoying, because they're right.
The first time I took a boat out of El Nido, we came around a headland into a lagoon where the water went from navy to a green I didn't have a word for, all in about four metres. The limestone walls went straight up on both sides. Someone on the boat actually laughed, which felt like the only reasonable response.
 

El Nido and the Lettered Tours

is the famous one, and it deserves the reputation. The tours are lettered A through D, and everyone agonises over which to pick. Take two. Tour A for the big lagoons, Tour C for the cliffs and better snorkelling. Go in the morning, because by eleven the lagoons fill up with boats and the spell breaks a little.
 

Coron and Why I'd Go Back There First

Coron sits five hours north by ferry and it's the place I'd return to before anywhere else. The water is clearer, the crowds are thinner, and there are Japanese shipwrecks from the Second World War lying shallow enough that even a nervous snorkeller can make them out. Kayangan Lake is reached by climbing up and over a ridge in serious heat, which sounds unappealing and absolutely is, right up until you see the water. Then it feels earned.

The Catch Nobody Mentions

The sea is the problem. Between July and September the crossings turn rough and tours get cancelled at the pier, sometimes for days at a time. Palawan is the one region where the calendar genuinely dictates your trip. If it's the centrepiece, go between December and May and build everything else around it.

Siargao: Where I Ended Up Staying Twice as Long as Planned

Three Nights Became Eight

I booked three nights in Siargao and stayed eight. This happens to a lot of people, and after a couple of days there you stop finding it surprising. There's no single attraction that traps you. It's the accumulation of small things: the road, the food, the fact that nobody seems to be going anywhere in particular.

It's Not Just About Surfing

Cloud 9 is the wave that put the island on the map, and the surf scene is real. But I don't surf well, and I still had the best week of the trip. Most of it was spent riding a scooter down palm-lined roads that look computer-generated, swimming in rock pools that fill and empty with the tide, and eating dinner at plastic tables with people I'd met that morning.

The Pace Is the Point

Nobody here is in a hurry. Boat trips leave when everyone's ready rather than at a fixed time, which would infuriate me anywhere else and somehow didn't here. I spent one entire afternoon in a hammock and felt no guilt whatsoever, which for me is close to a miracle. If your holiday style involves ticking things off, Siargao will either fix you or frustrate you.

It Breaks the Country's Weather Rules

Siargao sits on the eastern side of the archipelago, where rain falls more evenly through the year. That means it's often perfectly pleasant in July and August, exactly when Palawan is getting hammered. Surfers come between September and November for the big swells. If you don't surf, come between March and May when the water is flat and warm.

Nearly Cut From the Itinerary

Bohol looked like a day trip on paper, the sort of place you tick off between beaches. I very nearly dropped it. That would have been the single biggest mistake of the trip, and I've since talked two friends out of making the same call.

A Landscape That Photos Don't Sell

The Chocolate Hills are hundreds of near-identical grassy mounds that turn brown in the dry season and look, from the viewpoint, like something poured out of a mould. Every photo of them looks slightly fake and slightly underwhelming. Standing there and watching them run to the horizon is a completely different experience. It's the strangest landscape in the country and there's nothing else quite like it in Southeast Asia.

Tarsiers and Panglao

You also get tarsiers, tiny primates with enormous eyes, clinging to branches in a sanctuary where guides speak in whispers because loud noise genuinely distresses them. Then there's Panglao, joined to Bohol by a bridge, with white sand and reefs a short boat ride offshore. I saw more fish in one hour there than in the rest of the trip combined.

Everything Is Close Together

This is Bohol's quiet advantage. The hills, the sanctuary, the river, the beaches and the dive sites all sit within a couple of hours of each other, so you get variety without losing days to transit. Fast ferries run constantly from Cebu, which makes it one of the easiest islands in the country to reach.

Cebu: The Practical One That Surprised Me

Most People Leave Immediately

Cebu is where most visitors land and then immediately get onto another flight or a ferry. I did exactly that the first time, treating it as an airport with an island attached. The city itself is loud and traffic-choked and I wouldn't tell anyone to linger in it for long. But leaving the island as a whole unexplored is a mistake I'd happily talk you out of, because what's south of the city is completely different from what you see on the way out of the airport. It took me a second trip to work that out.

The Waterfalls in the South

The south of Cebu is full of waterfalls, and the water in them is a blue that genuinely looks like it's been tampered with in editing. Kawasan Falls is the famous one and it gets extremely busy, so either arrive early in the morning or pick one of the smaller falls nearby that nobody has heard of and where you might have the pool to yourself. The drive down from the city takes a few hours and the coastal road is worth the journey on its own, with the sea on one side and hills on the other. Base yourself in Moalboal or Badian rather than day-tripping from the city. That way you get the falls before the crowds arrive.

Canyoneering, From a Nervous Person

Canyoneering involves jumping off rocks into pools and sliding down natural chutes for several hours, wearing a helmet and a life vest and following a guide down a river gorge. I am not an adrenaline person and I want to be clear about that. I hesitated at the first proper jump for an embarrassing length of time while a queue formed behind It was still, without much competition, the most fun I had in the Philippines, and I'd do it again tomorrow. Go with a reputable operator, listen to the safety briefing properly, and don't attempt it after heavy rain when water levels rise fast.

The Hub Advantage

Cebu's other strength is unglamorous but genuinely useful: it's the transport centre for the entire central region, with flights, fast ferries and buses running in every direction. If you're island hopping anywhere in the Visayas you will pass through it regardless of what you plan, so you may as well give it two days rather than two hours.

It also has the best food scene outside Manila, which after a week of beach restaurants is more welcome than it sounds. Domestic flights from here reach almost everywhere in the country. Treating Cebu as a hub rather than an obstacle changes how the whole trip fits together.

Siquijor: The Small One I'd Tell a Friend About Quietly

A Reputation for Magic

Siquijor has a long-standing reputation across the Philippines for folk healers, love potions and superstition, and locals will tell you about it with varying degrees of seriousness depending on their mood and yours. Some Filipinos still won't visit. It's a good story and it's part of why the island stayed off the mainstream trail for so much longer than its neighbours, which is very much to the visitor's benefit today. There are healing festivals and traditional practitioners if you're genuinely curious. Mostly, though, the reputation just means fewer people, which is the real gift.

One Day on a Scooter

What Siquijor actually is: a small island you can circle on a scooter in a single unhurried day, with very little development, long empty stretches of beach and a waterfall with a rope swing that drops you into water so blue it looks edited. The main coastal road is about seventy kilometres and takes a few hours with stops. I went for one night and spent most of the following week wishing I'd given it three. The island is small enough that you can see all of it and still feel like you've barely scratched it, which is a strange and rather nice sensation.

Quiet in a Way the Big Islands Aren't

Sunsets on the west coast with nobody else on the sand at all. Restaurants where the owner sits down at your table because there's no one else in and the evening is long. Roads where you'll pass more water buffalo than cars, and where a wave from a passing scooter is standard. There's a century-old balete tree with a spring at its base where tiny fish nibble your feet, which sounds like a tourist trap and somehow isn't. If your idea of a good island is one where nothing much happens and nobody expects anything of you, this is it.

Getting There

Siquijor is reached by ferry from Dumaguete, which is itself a pleasant, walkable university town and well worth a night if your timings are awkward. The crossing takes around an hour and runs several times a day, so it slots neatly into a Visayas route between Bohol and the south.

Boats also connect from Bohol and Cebu, though less frequently and with more chance of cancellation. Check the schedule the day before rather than relying on what's printed online. Accommodation is limited compared to the bigger islands, so book ahead in high season.

Boracay: The One I Was Wrong About

Why I Avoided It for Years

Overcrowded, overdeveloped, ruined. That's what everyone told me, and I believed all of it without ever having been. Boracay is the island that travel snobs use as shorthand for everything that goes wrong when a beautiful place becomes popular, and I was more than happy to repeat the line at dinner parties. It took a fairly direct conversation with a Filipino friend, who pointed out that I was criticising somewhere I'd never seen, to make me actually book it. She was right and I was being a snob.

What the Closure Changed

Then the island shut completely for six months in 2018 for a full environmental rehabilitation, which was an extraordinary thing for a country to do to one of its biggest tourism earners. Beachfront structures came down, the sewage problem that had caused the crisis was tackled properly, and rules now govern what can and can't happen on the sand. What reopened is genuinely different from the place people describe, and the reputation simply hasn't caught up with the reality. The beach itself is visibly cleaner. It's one of the few examples anywhere of a destination taking that kind of decision seriously.

The Beach Really Is That Good

It's still busy and it's still the most commercial island in the country, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. But that four-kilometre stretch of White Beach is, objectively and without much argument, one of the great beaches on earth. The sand is powder-fine and stays cool underfoot even at midday, which I've experienced almost nowhere else. The sunsets, with the paraw sailboats silhouetted out on the water, are worth sharing with a crowd. I stopped resenting the other people on the sand by about day two and started rather enjoying the atmosphere.

How to Do It Properly

Two nights, not seven. Travel in the shoulder months rather than peak season, avoid Christmas and Easter entirely, and stay at the quieter northern end of the beach rather than the busy middle stretch. Station 1 and the far north are calmer; Station 2 is where the noise is. Eat away from the beachfront, where prices drop sharply and the food is better. Done this way, Boracay is a genuinely good stop rather than a compromise, and it works particularly well at the end of a trip when you want comfort.

What I'd Actually Do With Two Weeks

The Rule I'd Defend

Two islands per week, maximum. Every transfer costs you the better part of a day once you've counted the boat, the tricycle to the pier, the waiting around and the checking in at the other end. Three islands in a week means three lost days out of seven, and you'll spend the entire holiday packing a bag you only just unpacked. The trips I've enjoyed most were the ones where I gave somewhere four nights and got bored enough to wander, because that's usually when the good days happen. Ambition is the enemy here. Restraint is what makes the Philippines work.

Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me

Ferries run late and that's completely normal, so build slack into the plan and never schedule an international flight for the day after a boat crossing. Bring far more cash than feels sensible, because ATMs on the smaller islands run dry at weekends and plenty of restaurants and guesthouses don't take cards at all. Domestic baggage allowances are tighter than you'd expect and get enforced properly, so check before you fly rather than at the desk. And don't write off the rainy season out of hand: June to October is quieter, greener and considerably cheaper, and if you head east to Siargao the rain follows a different pattern entirely. My second trip was in September and I lost exactly one afternoon to weather.

Don't Chase the Perfect Beach

They're everywhere. Genuinely, everywhere, to the point where you stop photographing them after the first week. The best days I had weren't at the famous spots that I'd planned months in advance; they were the ones where I stayed somewhere an extra night because it felt right and cancelled whatever came next. The Philippines rewards staying still, which is precisely the opposite of what its geography seems to suggest. Seven thousand islands is an invitation to rush, and rushing is the one thing that will ruin the trip. Pick a few, stay longer, and let the rest wait for next time.
