Duration decreases the further you are from the centreline: totality reaches nearly 4 minutes 50 seconds near Tangier in Morocco, over 5 minutes across southern Tunisia, and varies along Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast.
Luxor lies almost exactly on the centreline, delivering the maximum land duration of totality, and southern Egypt has among the clearest, most reliably cloud-free August skies anywhere on earth. Watching day turn to night above the temples of Luxor and the columns of Karnak makes it a truly once-in-a-lifetime setting.

Yes. You must use ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses — not regular sunglasses, smoked glass, or exposed film — throughout every partial phase. It's only safe to look with the naked eye during totality itself, and glasses must go back on the instant the first sliver of sun reappears. Any camera, phone, or telescope also needs a proper solar filter during the partial phases.
