A Cairo short break is a focused 2–5 day visit to Egypt's capital and the Giza Plateau, designed for travellers with limited time — whether for a long weekend, a stopover, or a standalone city trip. Memphis Tours offers short breaks from 2 nights to 5 nights, packed with the very best Cairo has to offer.
Yes. With a well-organised private guide, you can comfortably visit the Giza Pyramids, Great Sphinx, Valley Temple, and the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in one full day. A second day allows you to explore Islamic Cairo (Khan El Khalili, Saladin Citadel, Mohamed Ali Mosque) and Coptic Cairo — giving you an excellent overview of 5,000 years of history in just 48 hours.
Cairo short break packages include private airport transfers, hotel accommodation (2–5 nights), a private licensed Egyptologist guide for all tours, all entrance fees to listed sites, daily breakfast, and a welcome drink on arrival. Optional evening activities (Sound & Light Show, Nile dinner cruise) can be added.
Day 1: Pyramids of Giza, Great Sphinx, Valley Temple, Grand Egyptian Museum. Day 2: Islamic Cairo (Khan El Khalili, Saladin Citadel, Mohamed Ali Mosque), Coptic Cairo (Hanging Church, Ben Ezra Synagogue). Day 3: Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, felucca ride on the Nile, evening Nile dinner cruise. Three days gives you an excellent Cairo experience.
The GEM is absolutely a priority on any Cairo short break. Located 2 km from the Pyramids, it is now fully open and is the world's largest archaeological museum. It houses the complete Tutankhamun collection, the Royal Mummies Gallery, and over 100,000 artefacts from all periods of Egyptian history. Allow at least 2–3 hours.
Cairo is a vast, busy, and sometimes chaotic city. For first-time visitors, a private guide and private transfers are strongly recommended — they save enormous amounts of time, remove all language and navigation stress, and ensure you visit only the best and most authentic sites, not tourist traps.
Cairo is excellent for families. Children are captivated by the Pyramids, the mummies, the Sphinx, and the Khan El Khalili market. Private guides are skilled at engaging children with age-appropriate storytelling. The GEM's interactive exhibits are particularly popular with younger visitors.
October through April is ideal, with Cairo temperatures of 15–25°C and minimal rain. December–February is peak season with the coolest and most comfortable weather. May–September is hotter (35°C+), but mornings are manageable and prices are lower. Cairo short breaks are possible year-round.
Must-try dishes include: kushari (Egypt's beloved street food of rice, lentils, pasta, and spiced tomato sauce), ful medames (slow-cooked fava beans with olive oil and lemon), taameya (Egyptian falafel made with fava beans), molokhia (green herb soup), and grilled kofta. For sweets, try Om Ali (Egyptian bread pudding) and baklava. Your guide can recommend the best authentic spots.
Egypt stands apart as the only destination where travelers can see 5,000 years of continuous civilization — from Pharaonic temples to Greco-Roman cities, Coptic churches to Ottoman mosques — all within a single country. Unlike Jordan or Morocco, Egypt also combines coastal luxury (Red Sea), Saharan wilderness, and Nile river culture in one geography, offering unmatched traveler versatility.
Egypt tourist visas are typically issued for a 30-day stay, with a 90-day validity window from issue date. Extensions can be obtained from the Mogamma building in Cairo's Tahrir Square or from Passport and Immigration offices in other cities. Extensions cost around 200–300 EGP and extend the stay by another 30 days. Multiple-entry visas (valid 6 months) are available online for frequent visitors.
